@HrothgarCanuck @Danidran @Polygon YES! Dark Horse's edition of Domu is a TREASURE. They did a beautiful job with the printing and translation and they went above and beyond with the essay that gave out precious context on the work and info on Otomo! Information on mangaka was SCARCE in the Anglosphere back then!
Dark Horse has also been supportive of non "straight white boy" comics through the years. So that quote? It's talking about the current state of comics. It's not throwing DH under the bus it's commenting on something DH has been a part of for a while. https://t.co/VyoG7C1iJr
According to the official Dark Horse Comics website, their bestselling new comic at the moment is "Orphan and the Five Beasts" an ultra violent Kungfu saga inspired by the Shaw Bros classic "Five Deadly Venoms"
Other top sellers from Dark Horse on Amazon include Minecraft, which is very consciously committed to diversity and Avatar which has an explicitly Asian setting as well as Zelda stuff which was of course made in Japan.
Dark Horse's best selling series ever, by far, is Berserk. If you go on Amazon right now, Berserk accounts for 10 out of 22 of their best selling comics at the moment. Berserk alone might account for something like 50% of all their books sold in recent years.
Misleading headline. Karen Berger (who is an incredibly accomplished editor who helped create DC's Vertigo imprint in 1993) was talking about American comics in general, not Dark Horse, which has always had a more diverse lineup than Marvel or DC.
@SavageCompanion It's a kind of cake frosting. But I smell like a baby now, so I *feel* like it must be some kind of skincare too!
I do wish I knew how to tread water though. This is how I feel whenever I attempt it. It feels like sprinting in gravy. I don't know how people do it! (Great comic by @ryanpequin here: https://t.co/xS4BmoghvH)
To this day I can't do your fancy breastrokes, butterflies or freestyles. If I'm in a boat and it goes down you'll catch me emulating either a squid or a dog. I don't care how silly it looks, it works!
It wasn't until I was in High School that I finally learned how to swim from my friend's mom. She was in the US army and taught me the simplest way. To float on my back and wave my arms and kick my legs a little. I learned more in 1 day with her than weeks of that swimming class
And of course, warm and fuzzy feelings for game music aside, it's worth noting that the vast majority of Japanese people oppose the Olympics being held right now and they're totally justified in their protest of the event. https://t.co/T6BNi24xu1
@nocotomi Like for instance, in America in the late 80s and 90s, it wouldn't have been unheard of for an avid reader to have read Maus, even if they weren't into comics. But that's because it was very much a trendy book at the time. I don't know if that's still the case decades later.
